STUDENT LIBRARY SPECIALIST

Provides assistance in university library or departmental reading room. May be required to:

  • Catalog books, periodicals, audio tapes, records, etc.
  • Charge library materials
  • Open and close building/reading room
  • Order reprints
  • Compute fines and send overdue notices
  • Assist patrons in performing in-depth searches
  • Process information from newspapers for micro text
  • Keep circulation statistics
  • Maintain proper study atmosphere
  • Assist patrons with the proper usage of equipment including tape recorders, microfiche readers, etc.
  • Oversee photocopier (e.g., replace paper, fix minor jams, collect and record money receipts from change box)
  • Perform general reception and clerical work such as photocopying, filing, answering phones, and taking messages
  • Organize and shelve materials
  • Assist in the preparation of new materials (e.g., banding books, typing labels, gluing book pockets, and unpacking shipments)
  • Check shelves and tables for missing or misplaced materials
  • Straighten furniture and fixtures
  • Assist in the training of other student workers
  • Participate in training sessions and staff meetings
  • Perform miscellaneous duties as required

Requirements:

  • Ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Ability to operate a computer and phone
  • Basic computer literacy
  • Customer service and communication skills (verbal and written)
